Employee motivation - these are the most important management tools
Motivated staff are the driving force behind every company. But employee motivation is not a commodity that can be ordered to order. It is the result of good leadership and the use of the right management tools. In this article, we have summarized the techniques and tools you can use as a manager.
The right management tools to motivate employees increase the productivity of any company
There are no universal management tools for motivating employees that always work. They must be selected according to the team situation and objectives. A distinction is made between direct and indirect management tools:
- Indirect management tools
Through targeted interventions in the company organization, you create the framework conditions for employees to use their potential. This starts with the right choice of personnel and extends to incentive systems and benefits and the shaping of the corporate culture.
- Direct management tools
You use direct management tools specifically to influence employees. This is achieved, for example, through a positive feedback culture, regular employee appraisals and the creation of direct incentives.
Ideally, you should combine both types of management tools to motivate employees, because both direct influence on your employees and the right framework conditions are important for developing a motivating team culture.
Which management tools for motivating employees are among the most important in leadership?
Which tools you actually use to motivate employees and which ones you give more or less weight to always depends on the individual situation and the personalities of your team. At this point, we have selected what we consider to be the most important management tools for motivating employees, which should always play a role in successful leadership.
- The leader as a personality
In a company, people work with people. This means that leadership also depends on the personality of the manager. Your values, your attitude to certain topics and your feelings directly influence your team. Therefore, one of the most important leadership tools is to develop charisma and an authentic personality that sets an example.
- Establish conflict management
Wherever people work together intensively, conflicts inevitably arise. While these often went unnoticed in outdated management structures, they are now seen as an important part of the work process and an opportunity for further development . The strength of a leader is shown by how well they can manage conflicts in the team. Conflicts should initially be viewed by the manager in a non-judgmental way so that different views can then be reconciled.
- Providing space for development
Today, the role of managers is no longer understood as forcing employees into roles, tasks and positions simply because they have their hat on. Rather, it is about creating space for this development. This in turn requires a great deal of knowledge of human nature and the ability to trust in the potential of the individual.
- Active listening
Communication is at the heart of every leadership style. In the understanding of modern leadership styles, listening means stepping out of passivity in conversational situations such as employee appraisals. It's not about letting yourself be talked over, but rather using certain communication techniques to actively participate in the conversation situation while listening. This can be achieved, for example, by maintaining an open posture, briefly summarizing what has been said, using all the senses and using gestures of affirmation in situations of uncertainty.
- Establish a feedback culture
Feedback has always existed, but only now has there been an awareness of how important it is to create a constructive feedback culture. Constructive feedback is always timely and well measured. Too much feedback can be confusing. In addition, feedback should not be based on a person, but on their behavior and should be formulated in concrete terms.
