Intuitive Leadership: Leadership with the 6th Sense

Leadership is often based on facts and figures. Important decisions are based on statistics and success curves, regardless of what our gut feeling actually says. In contrast to this is the experience that it is often precisely this gut feeling that shows us the right path, both privately and professionally. How important is this little voice in your head for leadership? Intuitive leadership aims to create an awareness that you can also trust this sixth sense in business.

What is Intuitive Leadership actually?

The significance of this leadership orientation is already in the name itself. It is based on the experience that intuition is indispensable in many areas of everyday life. Anyone who has had to answer multiple-choice questions at school or university without really having studied for them puts a cross next to their gut feeling. This is often exactly what ends up being correct. Even in foreign cities, we follow this when we walk through the city center and intuitively take the right direction to get to the sea.

Intuitive Leadership aims to raise awareness of the fact that the sixth sense should also play a role in leadership. Many large corporations make their decisions based on hard facts. However, these facts are based on long-term experience. At the very beginning, when this experience was lacking and there were no figures, the founders had to rely on their intuition. Leaders who want to follow their intuition need good perception, mindfulness and appreciation.

What added value does intuition have in leadership?

Companies are geared towards success, achieving goals, generating sales and further development. Intuitive leadership means making decisions not only on the basis of facts, but also taking other factors such as previous successes or the mood in the team into account when making decisions. If you give emotional questions space, you gain further facets so that a more comprehensive picture emerges. Intuitive leadership also gives you early warning signals if a project is threatening to go in the wrong direction or if challenges are looming.

That's why it's so difficult to follow your inner voice

Even successful and experienced managers are not protected from self-doubt. They are afraid of following their inner voice and then perhaps making the wrong decision. Instead, it is easier to make decisions on the basis of bare figures and thereby get a justification for failure. The numbers were wrong, not my gut feeling.

"The previous year's figures led me to believe...." is easier to say than "I was fooled by my gut feeling!" On the other hand, of course, feelings alone should not be allowed to decide important issues. Emotions are manipulative. If you got up on the wrong side of the bed, had an argument with your neighbor the night before or are currently dealing with conflicts in the family, you can of course bring this negative mood into the office. It's much more about reconciling intuition and rational thinking.

How to integrate intuitive leadership into your everyday business life

  • Putting intuition into context
You need good access to your emotions and the gut feelings of your team members for intuitive leadership. Always ask yourself: Are there any stress factors that are currently influencing your gut feeling?
  • Work-life balance
A healthy balance between work and relaxation is an essential prerequisite for a functioning intuition. So consciously take time out to relax.
