The inner compass: orientation in leadership

People in leadership positions have to master complex tasks. In addition to the great challenge of team leadership, new paths are to be found continuously in times of change, agility is to be lived and sovereignty is to be demonstrated. In everyday life, things can quickly become chaotic: Which task has to be done first, what can wait? The inner compass can now provide valuable orientation and create order.

What is the inner compass?

The inner compass is a kind of navigation aid in our entire life. It is something like the gut feeling, the intuition, an inner standard that makes you resistant to external opinions and influences. The inner compass helps you to find your way and supports you to keep your instinct. In the business environment, the inner compass is an instance for the process of making your own decisions.

Finding orientation through self-leadership in everyday leadership

In the turbulent business world, it is your job as a manager to act quickly, make the right decisions at the right time, and provide your team with security and orientation. Three essential competencies are necessary for this:

  • Self-responsibility
  • Self-knowledge
  • Self-control

In the performance-oriented business world, it is often much easier for managers to react to external demands. Who will be at the office door next, what meeting is coming up and what needs to be prepared for it? What comes up short in the process is the inner compass - recognizing what your own needs are. Acting against these needs costs a lot of energy. It is therefore all the more important that you follow your inner compass and bring your needs in line with the external requirements.

These strategies are important to apply self-leadership in everyday life

Following your inner compass ultimately means mastering the methods of self-leadership. There are various strategies that you can learn for yourself - with the help of our coaches.

  1. Strategy: Focus on inner goals
In order to be able to focus on something, you must of course first know where exactly you are directing your attention. In order to follow your inner compass in challenging situations, it is important to set yourself inner goals. You can then use these goals as a guide for your external actions.
  2. Strategy: Recognizing self-motivation
What is your personal motivation to give your best in your job? In order for your inner compass to provide you with guidance, you should identify the source of your self-motivation. The reward for your work should be found in the work itself and not, for example, in your bank account.
  3. Strategy: Create individual creative freedom
Your own environment is often shaped by other people. Pressure of expectations and external demands lead you to constantly strive to meet these expectations. Now it's important to press the stop button and take responsibility for shaping your work environment. In an environment that is more in line with your personal expectations, self-leadership becomes much easier.

Would you like to learn more about how you can better follow your inner compass in everyday life and gain more confidence for your (leadership) tasks? Then our coaches will be happy to support you.
