The term "daily huddle" comes from American football and means something like "confused bunch". The scenes on the pitch are repeated in one way or another in many companies. As soon as all the employees are there, there is a confusion of voices, people running around frantically and ringing telephones. Can an effective and organized start to the day look like this? Daily huddles are short, morning team meetings to bring all team members up to date and discuss the next steps. A maximum of 15 minutes is set aside for this, with the aim of ensuring that every employee knows the priorities for the day afterwards.
There are 6 golden rules to ensure that a daily huddle doesn't end in endless team meetings in which everyone has to briefly discuss something important again.
The location is a decisive criterion for the success of the daily huddle. In many companies, the team meeting is held standing up. This posture signals from the outset that it will only be a short meeting and that nobody has to make themselves comfortable in a lounge chair. Another important point: there is no discussion. The time is not there for fundamental discussions, but only to give a brief overview of the current project status. An effective daily huddle could look like this: each team member is given a short time to speak and answer two questions: What is my priority for today's working day and where do I still have a problem that is getting in the way?
The daily huddle has numerous advantages. First and foremost, every employee retains an overview of the current project status. Problems or obstacles are identified at an early stage and can be resolved jointly. In terms of agile project management, a course correction can be made at an early stage in many cases, which saves time, money and energy. In addition, each employee gets a feeling for the topics that the others are currently working on. A daily huddle can also be used to address private issues that have an impact on work performance. For example, a team member's mother is currently in hospital - the situation is stressful and means that the colleague cannot throw themselves wholeheartedly into their work. Perhaps tasks can be reassigned within the team until the person concerned is fully operational again?
A major added value of the daily huddle is that all team members get to know each other better. Trust in each other grows and it is easier for everyone to speak their mind. This ultimately benefits the working atmosphere and increases the efficiency of the team.
