5 tips to increase employee motivation

Why do you get up in the morning to go to work? Why do you invest your knowledge, your experience and your skills in your company or in certain projects? Sure - at the end of the day you want to pay for your next trip, a purchase and the occasional luxury item. But at the end of the day, it's always about enjoying your own success, realizing your own potential and making progress with personal commitment. Even in an employment relationship, employees strive to achieve professional goals. A high salary and lots of vacation days are nice. But employee motivation only begins here.

Why is employee motivation so important?

Employee motivation is one of the most important management tools. The idea behind this is that employees do not just come through the door in the morning for the money. They also need to develop a personal incentive to move the company forward. This is also about loyalty to the company. Benefits are interchangeable. If employees can only be retained through numbers and vacation days, they will be gone the next time a headhunter attacks. A high fluctuation rate in the company is neither economical, nor does it put you on the road to success. You can't put a price on motivated employees who are committed and passionate about their work and show a personal interest in the positive development of the company. The following tips will help you to significantly increase employee motivation within your teams.

5 tips to increase the motivation of your employees

With a few targeted measures, you can manage to change your employees' attitudes for the better.

  1. Appreciative feedback
Regular feedback meetings have become essential in every company. They serve as a guide for employees as to how their work performance is assessed. These meetings are not just about handing out trophies. Criticism is also allowed. It is important that employees are encouraged in their performance through feedback and recognize that this performance is recognized and valued.
  2. Responsibility
Just working through work lists can be really boring in the long run. Managers should learn to hand over responsibility and trust employees to take on independent projects. Being able to contribute their own specialist knowledge and experience to these projects is the best way to motivate employees to get up early the next morning.
  3. Management motivation
It's a popular tool in child education: if children don't want to eat spinach, parents set a good example and show them at the dinner table how good vegetables can taste. Employee motivation can only arise if line managers also demonstrate a motivated attitude. This can be shown, for example, in dedicated preparation for the next meeting or in a positive attitude when things are not going so well.
  4. Positive error culture
How you deal with errors has a noticeable impact on employee motivation throughout the team. If mistakes are punished or employees are even shown up for them, they will prefer to work to rule in future. A positive culture of error encourages employees to take on daring projects and try out new things off the beaten track.
  5. Flexible working models
The compatibility of private and professional life is one of the biggest boosters for employee motivation. Being able to work from any location or not having to submit an application for every doctor's appointment enables a good work-life balance. This not only boosts employee motivation, but also strengthens loyalty to the company.
